For many considering how to setup backup power to the house, one “main” transfer switch like this may be good. A big enough one can switch the whole house feed or a smaller selection (in a “subpanel”) to a generator, yet you just need to consider how many things you run at once (depending on the size on gen you get). I’ve seen some argue “It’s too easy to turn on too much feeding the whole house, so it shouldn’t be possible to overload the generator” making that sound bad, yet anyone can try plugging in several space heaters to one power strip to any circuit (that’s sure to pop breakers etc), so there needs to be some understanding of anyone taking control of the power.This box has knockouts only at the bottom, so all the wiring will need to come in there. You’ll have 3 cables, one for incoming regular power, one for generator or backup power, and one to the “Loads” or house circuits getting power. So those will fill this box up (especially if like 4 gauge for ~100 amps). I’m also noting how many switches will be setup so the switch “springs” closed or open rapidly between positions, yet they leave it up to you to fully move the lever on this (being sure it’s fully locked in one of the “on” positions). As it’s not used as often as the house light switches, hopefully that won’t be an issue for most.
